Reading Resolutions

Does anyone have any reading related resolutions? I have one to read at least two books a month, our book club book plus one of my own choosing. I have a long list of books I want to read and last year I read only a handful of books outside of our book club picks. I have the free time so there's no reason I shouldn't be able to accomplish this goal. I'm publicly declaring this resolution here so you can all hold me accountable.

Also, if you haven't started The Stand yet, it's not too late! I just started last night and calculated that you only have to read 80 pages a day between now and book club to finish. That's doable, right?

I do not have reading resolutions. Recently, however, influenced by ZenHabits, I did write a list of personal goals for myself that address the things I want to get out of life. First realization: my most important thing, what I want to get out of life, is to read more. So I put it on a virtual post-it note on my iGoogle page, along with a few other goals.

My next realization was that if you count magazines, news, and blogs, I read constantly. I mean, I have a magazine on the breakfast table and read it even if I'm sitting and chatting with Charlie. Sometimes, instead of reading a book to Charlie at night, I hand him one of his boring truck books and he reads that while I read my book club book (this is not as often as I would like but I hope it increases as he gets older). I have Google Reader or news sites open all day and when I am waiting on a call to go through, or a file to open, I'll read a quick blog post or news article. Some of it is crap, but a lot of it is really useful/enlightening information. This makes me feel good. Setting the intention to read more and staring at the goal every day has really made me appreciate how much I am able to squeeze reading into my day.

Third realization: I really want to read more books. So now as I am more mindful of how much I read, I want to figure out ways to squeeze in books in place of blogs or websites. The best way I have found to do this is not turn on the computer in the evenings. I usually only do this once a week. I guess you could say I do have an informal resolution to read more books instead of other materials.

I had the resolution last year to read a book a week. I started out great (5 books in 5 weeks) but then I stopped traveling and had to deal with all of the 'real life' items. I managed to read 20+ books (I lost count) so this year I am resolving to read 36 books. I figure that 3 a month should be easy, especially since I have 11 for books club and 20 or so on my night stand just waiting for me to read).

I was also inspired by Liz's post to actually spend more time on the computer reading - I need to broaden my horizons.

Hopefully posting this will keep me accountable :)
