"Her mix tape's a masterpiece . . . "

For those of you who still have old mix tapes from your past (preferably made by old boyfriends), you can post pictures of the tape, the songlist and a story here. I can't wait to do this with some of mine. I can only hope that one of the many people for whom I made mix tapes will do the same with one of my creations.

Raise your hand if someone put Depeche Mode's "Somebody" on a mix tape for you . . . that was pretty much the standard profession of love song by alterna-geek (and potentally gay?) boys in my high school years.

Even worse...I wrote a letter to a guy and included all the lyrics to "Somebody" and he noticed that I used the concert version instead of the original! Now that's geeky!

Oh Dawn, that is so sad and so funny. I've never even heard of this "Somebody" song before. I just pulled it up on iTunes and it was completely unfamiliar. Before my time, I guess.

My ex-boyfriend made me some excellent mixtapes, actually mix cds. I wish I had a scanner to show them, because he made really neat covers for them too. No mixtape for me was complete without Elvis Costello's "Alison."

Dawn - oh poor thing! I'm sorry I made a joke about that song. I'm proud of you for telling that story.

Allison - mix CDs?? You're such a young'un!

Count me in with Allison- I hadn't heard of "Somebody" before. Depeche Mode is way better than my favorite love song of my teens- "Save the best for last" by Vanessa Williams. That song still makes me teary...how lame is that?

As for mix tapes, I don't remember making or receiving that many but I do put together iTunes playlists and burn them as gifts a lot these days.

Well it is ironic that this topic came up this week. I was in Winston-Salem working at cleaning out my mom's house. My room has virtually remained untouched (well, until this week) since I left for college. I found several mix tapes! Some of them I trashed, but I kept a few. My favorite mix tape was from my boyfriend my junior year in high school. It had some Jane's Addiction, Creme, Beatles "Elinor Rigby", Cat Stevens "It's a Wild, Wild World", and some old school REM on it. Unfortunately I trashed it when we broke up.

So, I took a picture of the 3 mix tapes that are still in my possession. There could be more floating around, but these are the only ones I found in my room. (I still need to clean out the basement of my mom's house) I don't know how to post the picture though. The first tape is definitely from the 8th grade and is a mix tape I made for my crush at the time, but then never gave to him. It contained such hits as C&C Music Factory, "Everybody Dance Now", Sinead O'Connor "Nothing Compares to You", Chris Isaac "Wicked Game" (Still a fantastic song), a few Brazilian songs, and I am not sure what else.
The second is a mix tape my 9th grade boyfriend Roberto gave me upon my departure to the States. (Oh! So Tragic!!) It contains Enigma, EMF "Unbelievable", Extreme "More than Words", Guns and Roses "November Rain" and "Don't Cry", and several others.
The 3rd tape I found was actually just from a friend and contained a bunch of REM, Annie Lenox, Tori Amos, and Toad the Wet Sprocket.

Ahh... Mix CDs. I am old!
