Friday Bookish Meme

From BTT:

  • When somebody mentions “literature,” what’s the first thing you think of? (Dickens? Tolstoy? Shakespeare?)
  • Do you read “literature” (however you define it) for pleasure? Or is it something that you read only when you must?
Comments, anyone?

(This one's not as good as some . . .)

My first thought is of the heavy hitters...Dickens, Tolstoy, Shakespeare. But I also think of Austen, Bronte, Forester, etc. I only read the first group when required but the second group is all for fun (nerdy fun but still fun)!

I must do too many lit reviews, because my first thought is of the scientific literature as in "the literature on survey methodology suggests prepaid incentives are more effective than promised incentives . . ."

But then after that I think of the good stuff - just books in general, I don't really discriminate between the classics and more popular books.

When I hear "literature" I think of the highly acclaimed books, both past and present, ones that would be nominated for awards and reviewed in places like the NY Times. I think of books like Middlesex and The Namesake as literature so I do think I read literature for pleasure.
