Friday Bookish Meme

From BTT . . .

While acknowledging that we can’t judge books by their covers, how much does the design of a book affect your reading enjoyment? Hardcover vs. softcover? Trade paperback vs. mass market paperback? Font? Illustrations? Etc.?

Post your answer in the comments and have a great weekend everyone!

I don't have a strong feeling about this. It was once pointed out to me by an editor how comprehensive the book design for the Harry Potter series is, and it's true. So now I notice all the little touches like the font, the cover art, and the illustrations of Harry Potter books. Attractive covers, especially of trade paperbacks often want to make me read a book. And I enjoy hauling around a big hardback from the library (I'm remembering Shantaram) a lot less than I do slipping mass market Nora Roberts paperback into my purse! But mostly, I don't think it affects my enjoyment of the book.

I have to admit that I generally do judge a book by its cover. Trade paperbacks are my favorite! I'm a sucker for a pretty design.

The design of the book probably determines what book I pick up at the bookstore and leaf through but it doesn't affect my enjoyment of the book. I generally avoid books with gimmicky designs. One book I own but have never read is You Shall Know Our Velocity which begins on the cover. I think this gimmick is one reason I haven't read it yet.
